My Sketchbook- Documenting a Life

For as long as can remember, I have kept a sketchbook.  I started when I was young.  As a little girl, I remember sitting in front of the TV in my parents bedroom on Friday nights drawing.  By the time I was in high school, I had stacks and stacks of sketchbooks in my closet.  I documented years and years of my life through pages and pages of sketches.

During college, my sketchbook devotion continued.  I made notes about projects, teacher demonstrations, artists to study,  and reactions to peer critiques and faculty reviews.  When I studied abroad, my sketchbooks doubled as my scrapbook as I taped in ticket stubs, postcards, and other paper souvenirs.

When I started taking jewelry classes, I obsessively wrote down everything I learned in as much detail as possible.  Now, almost ten years later, it continues.  My sketchbook contains the most precious parts of my jewelry business, my designs.  It also serves as a catch-all for any notes about my business and artistic practice.

I draw out any and all design ideas and try to keep my sketches loose and gestural.

When I zero in on an idea or look that I like, I draw more specific pieces that I may want to fabricate.

Then there are some ideas that I though of months before, but still have not made.  Maybe one day...

I consume as much jewelry business related information as I can.  I listen to podcasts and interviews of people who have experience in the industry and take tons of notes.

If I have a new idea about how to apply jewelry fabrication techniques, I write it down.

When a client inquires about a custom piece of jewelry, I always begin drawing in my sketchbook to come up with potential ideas.

I take also notes about what camera settings I use when taking photos of my jewelry.

I even jot down ideas about what to write about on this very blog.  Remember my recent posts of famous artists born in July?  My sketchbook is where that began.

As you can imagine, I tend to keep this little book close to me at all times.  It is like a part of me.

I have a birthday coming up next week, and that always tends to be a time of reflection for me.  I was thinking that I have never really have kept a diary or a journal, but then again I have.  I have documented most of my life in the pages of my sketchbooks.  They may not be filled with words about my deepest feelings, but they are filled with the best part of me.  My creativity.

Wedding Adventures!

In 2016, I have been so happy to attend the 4 weddings of special friends!  Each was unique and beautiful, and I had such a great time at all of them.  Today, I thought I would share some things that I liked about each event.

1. Anne and Jeb

The first wedding I attended this year was a destination wedding in Cancun!  Talk about starting the year off right!  It was so nice to go to a warm climate in February to celebrate the wedding of my dear friend Anne and her very dapper man-friend, Jeb!

Anne did a such a thoughtful job putting together gift bags for all her guests.  Since we were at the beach, they included essentials like sunscreen and lip balm with SPF, but also water bottles and the cutest sunglasses that folded up to fit in any little purse.  She found these items at discountmugs.com.   They will send you samples for free so you can decide what you would like to purchase, and of course customize your swag so everyone can remember your special event!

Oh look, my AOT pals Abby and  Alicia were in Cancun too!  Here we are sporting our cute sunglasses!

Anne and Jeb also had the great idea of using Whatsapp to communicate with their guests throughout the weekend.  Through this app, they were able to create a wedding group and send messages to everyone about where they were and what they were up to.  The resort was fairly big, so it was nice to know where people were getting together.  After all, we wouldn't want to miss out on anything!

2. Diane and Jeremy

Diane and Jeremy are old friends of mine from art school.  I was so flattered to be invited to their wedding!  They had a really special ceremony.  While some couples write their own vows, Diane and Jeremy decided to write each other a letter that the officiant read aloud during the ceremony.  I thought this was a great idea because so many couples get very emotional when trying to read their own vows, and have trouble getting through them.  This way they could enjoy hearing their thoughts read aloud, along with their guests.

Here I am with some old friends and the groom, Jeremy, in the middle.  I only wish we had gotten beautiful Diane in the picture too!

3. Lydia and Larry

Lydia is one of the funniest people I know, so it was no surprise that when celebrating her marriage to her handsome husband Larry, she would do something unique to make us laugh.  At the reception, she had put wedding themed mad lib cards at each table for everyone to play.  It was a great way to laugh and get to know the other guests at the table.  Plus, I'm sure Lydia and Larry had a great time reading through what their friends and wrote after the ceremony.

4.  Laura and Matthew

Laura and Matt were married in Colorado, so I was again hopping a plane to celebrate.  They did a wonderful job of acknowledging the special part each of their guests played in their lives.  During the ceremony, the officiant told all guests that they would find a category listed on their place card for dinner.  He then went on to describe what each category meant to Matt and Laura.  I was in the "Friend at First Sight" group.  The officiant described us as  the old friends who had been there through the good times and bad, and would continue to be a part of Laura and Matt's life for years to come.  This made me tear up a little!

The gals and I also assisted by using our creative talents!  I made Laura's custom wedding ring!

This gorgeous ring is 18k gold, conflict free diamonds, and was hand-fabricated with love!  I was so honored to make this ring for Matt to give to Laura on their wedding day!
